Leesburg (May 28, 2016) – On Friday, May 27, Conference 21A No.2 Harrisonburg High School met with Conference 21B No.2 Heritage High School in the first round of the VHSL 4A West region tournament.
In the 70th minute, Heritage senior Nick Scola put one in the back of the net after a shot from junior Ryan Pyszka to give Pride the 1-0 lead.
“Pyszka had a great shot, I would say it’s just to be in the right place at the right time,” said Scola. “We kept the intensity going after the goal.”
The game started very slowly for both teams, but at the end of the first half the game started to get faster. And pride would keep him that way for most of the second half.
“I think what we said at halftime, that our season was about to end [pushed them]Heritage head coach Betsy Munson said. “Andrés [Villalon] – our captain speaking – [talked at halftime]and he sort of finds a way to motivate the team and say pretty much what the coaches say, but that means a little bit more when it comes to [a teammate]and a leader you respect.
In the 76th minute, Heritage junior – and Binghamton’s recent engagement – Kosta Nika would add a goal for them all but secure the victory for pride.
“I was lucky to be in the right place to take advantage of a good opportunity to score a goal, ”said Nika.
Pride never looked back as she played solid defense for the remaining four minutes.
“I really didn’t want any disappointment because at this level, if it’s 2-1, that changes everything. If the other team increased the numbers, you can easily match them, ”said Munson. “I have the impression that it is quite difficult to relax [defensively]lead 2-0 in a playoff game. You see the other team knowing that their season is going to be over and that they are going to give it their all. So we didn’t want to relax, if it had been 3-0 it might have been a little different but we just wanted to make sure we got the job done tonight.
Heritage will be heading to 22 No. 1 Kettle Run on Monday May 30 for a 6 pm game in a VHSL 4A West quarterfinal.
