Alexandria Scholarship Fund Launches Emergency Fundraising Campaign

A student from Alexandria is surprised with a large scholarship check from the Alexandria Scholarship Fund.

The Alexandria Scholarship Fund issued an emergency appeal for donations last week as they had to cancel their spring gala due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Priscilla Goodwin, Board Chair, and Beth Lovain, Executive Director, emailed last week for a final call for scholarship funding, and the amount of donations received during this campaign. emergency will determine the scholarship levels for the class of 2020 which will be done this week.

“The Class of 2020 have worked so hard; please help make college possible for bright and talented kids in Alexandria with financial need,” Goodwin and Lovain said in their email.

The email also states that this year they received a record number of scholarship applications. There were 488 graduating students from TC Williams High School who applied for scholarships this year.

According to the Alexandria Scholarship Fund website, there is a great need for scholarship funding, and it continues to grow. Since 1986, they have distributed $16.5 million in scholarships and sent 4,750 TC Williams graduates to college.

The website also states that every year they give out $1 million in scholarships and they still have to turn away about 100 students a year due to insufficient funding.

The Alexandria Scholarship Fund says that with 2 out of 3 students in Alexandria schools living near the poverty line, scholarships and counseling are essential in the community. Their scholarships are for students in need, and they now need funding more than ever, as families living near or below the poverty line will be the hardest hit economically by the COVID-19 pandemic. .

The scholarships are based on student financial need and range from approximately $12,000 to $40,000 over 4 years. For every dollar donated, 93 cents goes directly to fund scholarships. In 2019, more than half of scholarship recipients were the first in their families to attend university.

This year, the annual spring gala would have been the 34th and they expected to raise approximately $450,000 to support college scholarships. The gala was to take place on Saturday, April 25. At the gala, the community celebrates the generosity of Alexandrians and also honors past recipients while trying to raise funds for scholarship funding for years to come.
