ALEXANDRIA, VA- Dunbar Boys and Girls Olympic Club received back-to-school gifts on Friday, August 23! The family of the late Wilson Thompson, president of the former Queen Street Business Association, were on hand to watch the organization distribute its final $2,000 to the club in the form of new gym mats, a Nintendo Switch, balls basketballs, soccer balls and other equipment.

“Wilson [Thompson] had a strong commitment to the community and helping minority businesses,” said former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille.

Alston Waller, the branch manager of the Boys & Girls Club, said Thompson worked across the street for decades and regularly waved children in and out of the building at 401 N Payne St.

“These gifts are more of a recruiting tool to get more kids, because those kids don’t have anything else to do,” Waller said.

It was Keith Calhoun, the former treasurer of the ACSQ, who thought of the donation.

“A lot of it is about publicizing the Boys & Girls Club and expanding the horizons of what these kids are seeing and doing,” Calhoun said. “I thought it would be a good thing, and I’m happy to be able to help.”

The Boys & Girls Club is currently in need of healthy snacks for children, including juice boxes, fresh fruit and yogurt.

The 5th annual session of the class is N [CINS] will take place on Sunday, August 25 at the club, and attendees will be able to engage in classroom sessions focusing on STEM, health and wellness, and finance. After the class session, free haircuts and braids will be provided in addition to manicures, food, book bags and school supplies. The event is free and open to the public. Learn more about
