Law enforcement officials from multiple agencies joined traffic safety officials Thursday in Lincoln to encourage safe driving in Nebraska this summer.
The Nebraska State Patrol and dozens of other law enforcement agencies participate in the annual meeting Click it or Ticket campaign. The initiative spans the weeks surrounding Memorial Day, which marks the start of the summer driving season.
“Our soldiers respond to accidents across the state and unfortunately some of them result in fatalities. In many cases, a seat belt could have been the difference between life and death,” says Nebraska State Patrol Superintendent Col. John Bolduc. “It’s heartbreaking. It is harmful for families. It hurts our communities, and it doesn’t have to happen.
the Click it or Ticket The campaign runs from Monday May 23 to Sunday June 5. Troopers and dispatchers will work overtime as part of the effort, thanks in part to a $24,780 grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Bureau of Highway Safety.
“Fastening your seatbelt is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself and all of your passengers in the event of an accident,” said Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator Bill Kovarik. “I believe there is someone who relies on each of us to buckle up every time we get into a vehicle so that we get back alive and safe.”
According to NDOT-HSO, Nebraska ranks 4and worst in the US in seat belt use, at 81%. The national average is over 90%.
