Side Effects, Cost, Uses, Dosage & More

Like most medications, Xywav can cause mild to severe side effects. The lists below describe some of the more common side effects that Xywav can cause. These lists do not include all possible side effects.

Keep in mind that the side effects of a medicine can depend on:

  • your age
  • other health problems you have
  • other medicines you are taking

Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you more about the potential side effects of Xywav. They can also suggest ways to help reduce side effects.

Mild side effects

Mild side effects of many medications can disappear within days to weeks. But if they become bothersome, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Serious side effects

Serious side effects from Xywav can occur, but they are not common. If you have serious side effects from Xywav, call your doctor right away. But if you think you have a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

suicide prevention

If you think someone is at immediate risk of harming themselves or another person:

  • Dial 911 or your local emergency number.
  • Stay with the person until help arrives.
  • Remove any guns, knives, drugs, or other objects that could cause damage.
  • Listen, but don’t judge, argue, threaten or yell.

Boxed warnings

XywavName possesses framed warnings for a risk of central nervous system (CNS) depression and a risk of misuse. Boxed warnings are serious warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Risk of CNS depression. Xywav works by depressing (slowing down) your CNS activity. This is called CNS depression, and it can happen with Xywav even if taken as directed. CNS depression can impair your judgment, thinking, and motor skills.

Due to the risk of CNS depression, you should not take Xywav with alcohol. You should also not take it with medicines called sedative hypnotics. These are medications prescribed for certain sleep disorders.

Taking other CNS depressants with Xywav can cause serious side effects, including:

In rare cases, taking CNS depressants with Xywav can be fatal.

Risk of misuse. Xywav poses a risk of misuse. (Misuse is when a drug is used in a way other than how it is prescribed). Improper use of Xywav can lead to serious side effects, including difficulty breathing or coma. In rare cases, it can be fatal.

What might help

After taking a dose of Xywav, you should avoid hazardous activities or any activity that requires you to be fully awake for at least 6 hours. Examples include driving a car or operating machinery.

Due to the risk of CNS depression and misuse, the distribution of Xywav is restricted by a program called the Risk Assessment and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). This means that the drug is available only from certain prescribers and from a specially certified pharmacy. The FDA requires certain drugs to have REMS to help manage the serious risks associated with those drugs.

Weightloss

Treatment with Xywav may cause weight loss. But in studies of the drug, this side effect was not common in adults. It occurred more often in children who took the drug.

Decreased appetite is one of the most common side effects of Xywav. A decrease in appetite can lead to weight loss.

What might help

If you have weight loss that bothers you while taking Xywav, talk to your doctor. They can suggest ways to reach or maintain a weight that’s right for you.

Abnormal dreams or unusual behaviors during sleep

After taking Xywav, you may have abnormal dreams or unusual behavior while sleeping. These side effects were quite common in studies drug.

Unusual sleep behaviors that have been reported in these studies include:

  • while eating
  • somnambulism
  • while speaking
  • perform other tasks, such as chores

Some people have been injured as a result of these sleeping behaviors.

What might help

While taking Xywav, if you have abnormal dreams or unusual behavior while sleeping, tell your doctor. They can recommend ways to help treat this side effect.

Your doctor may suggest that you stop treatment with Xywav. If so, they can recommend alternatives to treat your condition.

Allergic reaction

Some people may have an allergic reaction to Xywav. Although it does not appear that allergic reactions have been reported in studies from Xywav, they have been happening since it’s been available in the market.

Symptoms of a mild allergic reaction may include:

A more serious allergic reaction is rare but possible. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction can include swelling under the skin, usually on the eyelids, lips, hands or feet. They can also include swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing.

Call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction to Xywav. But if you think you have a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.
