Trulance can cause mild to severe side effects. The following lists contain some of the main side effects that can occur when taking Trulance. These lists do not include all possible side effects.

Here are some details about some side effects that this drug can cause. To find out how often side effects occurred in clinical trials, see the prescribing information for Trulance.
Mild diarrhea is the most common side effect of Trulance. With mild diarrhea, you may have loose stools along with other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or cramping. In clinical testsmild diarrhea usually occurred during the first 4 weeks after starting treatment with Trulance.
In rare cases, Trulance can cause severe diarrhea. In case of severe diarrhoea, your symptoms may be so severe that your condition needs to be treated in hospital. In clinical trials, severe diarrhea usually occurred within the first 3 days of starting treatment with Trulance.
Both mild and severe diarrhea can increase your risk of dehydration. * With dehydration, your body loses large amounts of water and electrolytes (essential minerals found in your body).
Steps you can take
If you have diarrhea, you can stay hydrated by drinking sports drinks or water. Certain foods can also help relieve diarrhea. Examples include bananas, rice, apples, and toast (commonly referred to as the BRAT diet).
Talk to your doctor if you have bothersome or severe diarrhea while taking Trulance. They may ask you to stop taking the medicine until your symptoms improve. In severe cases, your doctor may advise you to go to hospital for IV rehydration (fluids injected into your body intravenously).
Risk of severe dehydration in children
Trulance can cause severe dehydration in children. In reality, Trulance has a
Animal testing found an increased risk of dehydration in young animals given Trulance. But animal trials don’t always predict what will happen in humans. It is not known for sure whether Trulance increases the risk of dehydration in children.
Due to the way Trulance works in the body, the medicine may increase the risk of severe diarrhea in children under 6 years old. And severe diarrhea can lead to severe dehydration.
Because of this risk, children under 6 years of age should not be given Trulance. And doctors generally won’t prescribe Trulance for use in people under the age of 18. Trulance is not approved for this age group.

As with most medicines, some people may have an allergic reaction after taking Trulance.
Symptoms of a mild allergic reaction may include:
A more serious allergic reaction is rare but possible. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction may include:
- swelling under the skin, usually in the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet
- swelling of the tongue, mouth or throat
- difficulty breathing
