Earlier this month, Kylie Jenner thought it would be cute to Instagram her and Travis Scott’s twin private jets as much of the country suffered from a heatwave and multiple wildfires that continue to burn. The immediate backlash inspired some internet sleuths to take a closer look at the very short and very expensive private jet flights which celebrities apparently take, with much debate as to which celebrity wins the title of worst”climate criminal.” Is it Kylie, who allegedly took a three-minute flight from one part of California to another? Or maybe it’s Drake, who clearly doesn’t understand climate change and thinks his private jet can do multiple 14-18 minute trips as long as there are no passengers on board? (Per Drake, planes are moved for storage.) Turns out the biggest private jet polluter of the year is actually Taylor Swift.
According to a sustainability-focused marketing agency Court, which published research Friday on celebrities who are the “worst CO2 emitters in private jets”, Swift has flown 170 flights on her private jet since January, with an average flight time of 80 minutes and her shortest flight at 36 minutes. While T. Swift’s flights are longer than some of its carbon-emitting counterparts, Yard’s research indicates that its total flight emissions this year (which, I might add, are barely two-thirds of the way) already exceed 8,000 tons, which is at least 1,000 times higher than the annual carbon emissions of an average person. I guess celebrities are not like us? Other names on Yard’s list of climate offenders include Jay-Z, who placed third; Kim Kardashian, who placed seventh; and Travis Scott, who came in tenth. Kylie, surprisingly, didn’t even make the list, which, good for her, I guess? But everything is very bad for our warming planet.
Swift responded to the report through a spokesperson, who said TMZ, “Taylor’s jet is regularly loaned out to other people. Attributing most or all of these trips to him is obviously incorrect. According to this statement, Swift has not personally flown 170 times on her private jet in the past 212 days. Whether or not that absolves him of any liability, well, that’s another conversation.
