Viagra without a prescription will help stop the boom in the counterfeit market, experts say

One type of Viagra will be available without a prescription in the UK, and some experts say Australia should consider doing the same.

Dr Nial Wheate, senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, said it could reduce the number of people buying counterfeit versions of Viagra, which can be dangerous for consumers.

“One of the things we have to ask ourselves in Australia is, should we do it ourselves?” he said.

Dr Wheate said that many men unable to obtain a prescription are turning to the internet or sex shops to purchase the erectile dysfunction drug.

“Being able to make it available in Australia in pharmacies will help mitigate that risk,” he said.

He said one of the risks was illegitimate online pharmacies, with studies showing there are as many as 1,800 online.

They may sell tablets with too much or too little of the active ingredient in Viagra.

Dr Wheate said there have also been reports of counterfeit tablets containing blue ink to make them look real Viagra.

“Right now, the counterfeit drug market is around $ 75 billion and Viagra is a big part of it.”

Why not just go to a GP and get a prescription?

Dr Wheate said there were a number of logistical reasons that could prevent men from seeing a GP.

“The first evidence is that there are no general medical services in their area, or the waiting list could be too long,” he said.

“This may also be because prescriptions tend to be for very small amounts as well.

“Viagra comes in just four pills at a time and some men may not think it is right for them or their partner’s needs – and so they might try to supplement this by buying online.”

Dr Shane Jackson, national president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, said up to 70 percent of men with erectile dysfunction do not go to the doctor for treatment.

“Because they suffer from erectile dysfunction, they can have high levels of anxiety and depression, and they just don’t necessarily want to talk about this problem with their healthcare professionals who are treating them.”

“If the UK, New Zealand have been successful, so is Australia”

The UK was not alone in making the drug available without a prescription, New Zealand has a similar system in place.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) was not available for an interview, but told PM it was considering a proposal to make one type of Viagra available over the counter in July of this year.

The last request was denied because it determined that the risks associated with purchasing the over-the-counter drug could not be managed in the pharmacy setting.

Dr Jackson said if the UK and New Zealand managed to pull through, Australia could too.

“There has to be additional checks, so you can only provide it under certain protocols,” he said.

“The pharmacist must take additional training and be certified in that training, and this must be done in an environment that is private and must be registered.”

“Right now, under… the TGA planning framework, the TGA is not in a position to demand that these things happen because they cannot guarantee that they do, so they are over-erring. caution that limits access.

“[Which] does not actually reflect the nature of what happens with some men when they buy these counterfeit drugs on the Internet. “
